You worked a miracle on my scrawny body. My trip mate described me as "clambering all over the ruins in SE Asia like a goat". I took it as a big compliment and it was all thanks to you. I was a tall, puny weakling when I arrived at your doorstep.
Thanks for your knowledge, patience and encouragement Victoria, you made it fun and easy too.
I am writing this as an expression of heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the help and direction you have given me in embracing a new and rejuvenate lifestyle. The changes you have instilled have been profound. The journey began with my emotional outpouring of frustration and anger with my doctor who recommended surgery as a way to curtail my weight gain. You asserted that surgery was absolutely unnecessary, but with revamped diet and fitness regimes, change could be achieved. Thrown into the mix were physical challenges that included a corrected herniated disc and an arthritic knee, both limiting mobility, but you were undaunted by the restrictions. Quite the contrary, your professionalism had you embrace these as exceptions, but never impossibilities. You encouraged small changes without demanding extreme compromises all at once; you were congratulatory for the most minor achievements and were sensitive to how my hurting parts felt after each new routine was introduced. You followed up and answered all my questions, never making me feel like they were silly or trivial. All this bolstered my dedication.
When we began, my fitness routine was like a one trick pony; one routine addressing a little bit of something, but not thorough or effective because it was not comprehensive. Now, you have developed six complete routines for me. Follow up includes changes and progressions as I get stronger along with supervision of my technique, critical in the prevention of injury. You did not pressure me to subject myself to scales and measurements when I initially objected, so you allowed me to measure my progress with the unscientific monitoring of belt holes and clothing size. I still haven’t gotten on a scale, but I do know I have lost almost 4 clothing sizes and I can’t use that old belt anymore. It is too big.
What you taught me about nutrition was revelatory, namely that eating is mandatory. Snacks and stuff that tastes good do not have to be stuffed with sugar, salt and useless carbohydrates. The cookbooks you recommended have lots of variety and the substitutions make sense and are easy to incorporate. My mantra became “don’t be lazy, make the effort; if you want to eat, you got to cook, and a little planning ahead makes all the difference.” Now I never miss a snack. Furthermore, when some supplements disagreed with me, or I could not adjust to the taste, there was no hesitation in supplying me with alternatives. You never gave up. Furthermore, you gave me a clear, concise and well laid out schedule for eating and intake of supplements after an initial and careful survey and analysis of the chemistry and physiological history that was “me”. I said that what I ate can’t mean deprivation or be punitive and you listened. Because you advocated for small compromises and were never pressuring, you instilled confidence that this was doable and ultimately got a tidal wave of change out of me.
In conclusion, a small anecdote is here for you. Once I went to a prestigious clothing store and the clerk somewhat arrogantly said, “ we don’t have your size.” I was crushed, humiliated, embarrassed and furious. Heart break. I began shopping at the stores that catered to plus sized clients. Then I began working with you. Within six months, seasons changed and once again I visited to the plus sized store for jeans. Once again the clerk admitted, “We don’t have your size” But this time — JUBILATION.
